Physical and chemical properties of sandstone.
Sandstone is softer than granite because its density is about1600-2700 kilogram /ì3 while background radiation is absent. Comparatively to limestone the sandstone is water- and frost – resistant. After multiple tests the stone proved to endure 50 times of complete freezing and defrosting (F=50). Such results leave no doubts for the benefit of sandstone usage under changeable weather conditions. Low water-absorbing capacity of 0,2% and porosity of 0,74% appeal to the fact that the higher its strength is the less absorption becomes. All mentioned factors contribute to the longevity of a sandstone.
Sandstone occupies the happy medium between limestone and granite. Its coefficient of fragility is equal to 0, 19 and density is equal to 2,68 gram/centimetre3.
Ultimate strength of a sandstone under the pressure of 122,2 mPa allows to influence on a plate whose area is about 1 square metres by the weigh of 35 ton. Through years the influence of binding elements under natural pressure predetermined the abradability of a sandstone in 0,55 gram/square centimetre.
